Reusing Charts and Images
Updated
Material on Where Tales Began comes under several different terms. The site's own charts can be reused freely with a credit; other images, texts and data keep the licences their owners gave them. Every caption says which terms apply to the item it describes.
Charts, tables and CSV files made by the site
Charts, timelines, maps and comparison tables drawn by Where Tales Began, and the CSV files offered for download with them, are released under the Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 licence (CC BY 4.0). They can be copied, adapted and used commercially, as long as the credit is given. Each one has a credit line ready to copy, in this form:

The credit line includes the address of the page the chart comes from. A link back to that page is the credit the site hopes for, but it is a request, not a condition added to the licence; CC BY 4.0 asks for a reasonable credit, and the line above is one way to give it.
The licence covers only what the site itself drew. When a chart is laid over a third-party image, such as a plate from an old star atlas, the caption adds an "Underlying image" credit, and that image stays under its own terms.
Material under ShareAlike licences
Some texts and editions used on the site carry a ShareAlike licence, which requires adaptations to be shared on the same terms. Greek and Latin texts from the Perseus Digital Library and First1KGreek are published under CC BY-SA 4.0, and cuneiform editions on Oracc, such as the RINAP 5 royal inscriptions and the Ashurbanipal Library Project, are published under CC BY-SA licences.
A chart or table that includes such material is released under a ShareAlike licence too, never under the site's plain CC BY. One built on Perseus or First1KGreek texts is released under CC BY-SA 4.0. One built on an edition that uses an earlier version, such as RINAP 5 under CC BY-SA 3.0, keeps that version. The caption names the licence and credits the source in the form the source asks for: "Perseus Digital Library / First1KGreek, CC BY-SA 4.0" for those texts, and the Oracc project with its named authors for cuneiform editions. A table that only gives the work and the line or chapter number of a passage, without its wording, stays under CC BY 4.0.
Photographs, paintings and other third-party images
Images from other sources are used under their own licences, and the caption of each one carries the full credit: the title of the work, its creator or the credit its source asks for, the address of the source page, and the licence with a link. If the image was cropped or adjusted, the credit says so. For a public-domain image, the caption states why it is in the public domain, for example the year the artist died, or the public-domain mark on the source page. Reuse of these images follows their own terms, not the site's.
Data from other sources
Charts and CSV files that use outside data credit it in a line beginning "Data source on record", and that line appears only where the data are used. The International Astronomical Union publishes its list of the 88 constellations with their abbreviations, the constellation boundary coordinates and the star names of its Working Group on Star Names (WGSN) under CC BY 4.0. They are credited as "IAU", or "IAU WGSN" for the star names. Cuneiform transliterations or translations taken from the Cuneiform Digital Library Initiative are credited as "CDLI, https://cdli.earth".
Illustrations
Images whose caption begins "Illustration: Where Tales Began", and cards that carry the label "Illustration", are the site's own illustrations. They are stylized pictures, not photographs, historical artifacts or records. They are © Where Tales Began, all rights reserved, and they are not covered by the CC BY release above.
Fonts
The site's typefaces are released under the SIL Open Font License 1.1, and they are used unmodified:
- Spectral for headings.
- Alegreya for the main text.
- IBM Plex Mono for data and captions.
- Noto Serif as a fallback for Greek letters in headings.
Citing a page
Every entry carries a Cite this page block. It names Where Tales Began as the author and gives the title, the date of publication, the date of the last substantive revision and the canonical address of the page; add the date you accessed it. Where Tales Began does not issue DOIs, so a citation points to the page address.
